Organizers of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Friday announced the names of the venues for the quadrennial competition.
Venues for ski jumping, biathlon and cross-country skiing will be located inside the Alpensia Resort in PyeongChang, some 180 kilometers east of Seoul. They have been named, respectively, Alpensia Ski Jumping Center, Alpensia Biathlon Center and Alpensia Cross-Country Center.
Alpensia will also host sledding events and the venue for skeleton, luge and bobsleigh will be called Alpensia Sliding Center.
The two skiing venues have been named Yongpyong Alpine Center, within Yongpyong Resort in PyeongChang, and Jeongseon Alpine Center, in the county of Jeongseon a bit south of the host town.
Snowboard and freestyle skiing will be held at Bokwang Snow Park, west of PyeongChang.
The city of Gangneung, east of PyeongChang and closer to the East Sea, will host speedskating, figure skating, hockey and curling in its Gangneung Coastal Cluster. Yulgok Hockey Center will be the venue for the men’s hockey during the Olympics and then ice sledge hockey during the Paralympics. Gangneung Curling Center will host curling events for both able-bodied and disabled athletes.
Gyeongpo Oval is the name of the speedskating venue, while short track and figure skating will take place at Gangneung Ice Arena.
Kwandong Hockey Center will be built on the campus of Catholic Kwandong University in Gangneung for the women’s hockey.
The organizing committee for the Olympics said it has consulted with the province of Gangwon and national federations of each sport since March last year, and the names were finalized after discussions with the International Olympic Committee.
