Organizers of the Incheon Asian Games said they will stage a closing ceremony that will both recapture various moments of the continental event as well as leave an imprint of the host city on all spectators and participating athletes.

The curtain will come down on the Incheon Asian Games on Saturday with a grand closing ceremony spiced up with fireworks after 16 days of competition and friendship shared not only by participating athletes but also by billions of people on the continent.

The two-and-a-half hour closing ceremony will be staged at Incheon Asiad Main Stadium starting from 6 p.m. on Saturday, organizers said.

“The main theme of the closing ceremony is that those who come to or watch the event on Saturday will come to remember Incheon,” Jang Jin, a filmmaker and the Asiad executive art director, said during a press conference.

“We’d like to put the spotlight on the city, its people’s efforts to run the Asian Games and their work in helping to bring all of Asia together.”

He again highlighted Incheon Asiad’s primary motif, “Dream of 4.5 billion people, One Asia.”

A number of artistic performances, including traditional dances as well as a taekwondo demonstration by members of Kukkiwon, the global headquarters of the martial art, will be featured to play up the cultural aspect of the host country.

Asked about the format of the performances, Jang said it will mainly consist of film and image projections as the crew will have not much time to rehearse live performances due to limited facilities.

“Unfortunately, there is no venue built specifically for the opening and closing ceremonies, and the one we’re using will be tied up (with a marathon competition) until the day before the closing event” he said, explaining that using video footages will be more appropriate, given the situation.

Likewise, a video highlighting the memorable events at this year’s Asiad will be shown to recapture the excitement of the sports stars and their competitions, according to the art director.

In contrast to the opening ceremony where the participating athletes marched into the stadium in the order of their country, Jang said the closing ceremony will have athletes in different uniforms enter mixed together and in no particular order to help convey the “One Asia” message until the very end.

K-pop stars will again be summoned to wrap up the ceremony, with boy band Big Bang slated to perform on Saturday in front of the athletes from 45 countries.

To spice up the last moments of the 2014 Asian Games, Jang said fireworks will play a part once more and promised that “not one shot will be left unused,” hinting at a grand finale. (Yonhap)
