[Asian Games] Olympic champ Kim Jae-bum re-claims Asiad gold

South Korean Olympic champion Kim Jae-bum won gold in the men’s under-81 kilogram judo at the Asian Games on Sunday for the second time in the continental competition.
Kim outdueled Nacif Elias from Lebanon by shido in the event’s final at Dowon Gymnasium in western Incheon to win the men’s -81 kg title at the Incheon Asian Games.
He had won gold in the same category at the Guangzhou Asiad four years ago.
Japan’s Keita Nagashima and Mongolia’s Nyamsuren Dagvasuren shared bronze in the men’s third-heaviest class.
Kim rallied to the semis through all-ippon victories, outfighting Waleed Rezq Ali Alkabzari from Yemen for ippon in a round of 16.
In the quarterfinal match against Park Hong-wi of North Korea, who beat Turkmenistan’s Tejen Tejenov by ippon, Kim again slammed an ippon triumph with three seconds remaining to advance to the semis.
In the semis, Kim edged out Japan’s Keita Nagashima with a golden score win.
The gold-medal decider was close as both Kim and Elias received shido, or penalty, in the five-minute duel. At the end of the match, the number of penalties decided the winner, as the Lebanese fighter received two shidos, with Kim earning one.
“It was a live-or-die for me because of my daughter. Now I am the father in a family,” Kim said in a press conference. “I completed the grand slam, which only 1 percent of players attain. I want to stand among the 1 percent group.”
Those who win four titles from each of the Olympics, world championships, Asian Games and Asian championships are recognized as a grand slammer in the judo world.
With the title at Incheon, he became the third South Korean judoka to win gold in two straight Asian Games.
Chung Hoon, a former South Korean coach for the 2010 Asiad, had bagged two titles in 1990 and 1994, while Hwang Hee-tae, a training coach for the judo squad, had snapped up two straight gold medals in 2006 and 2010.
Kim has been the biggest judo star in South Korea since he swept the world champion title in 2010 and 2011 and won the Olympic gold in 2012.
In the men’s 73 kg event, Bang Gui-man won bronze through repechage after an ippon win over Uzbekistan’s Navruz Jurakobilov in the medal decider.
He was dominant in his first match, beating Mohsin Shahwali for ippon with 2:28 remaining in the round of 16.
In the quarters, however, he lost to Japan’s Hiroyuki Akimoto by a shido and was relegated to repechage.
“I’ve prepared a lot for this game, but the Japanese player had better strategy and techniques,” said the 31-year-old veteran judoka. “But I did my best to show my best to my children.” (Yonhap)
