Hyundai Motor, South Korea’s top automaker, will begin selling a revamped Genesis luxury sedan in China this month, a company official said Saturday, as it seeks to better compete with German brands in the high-end segment of the world’s largest car market.

The revamped Genesis, which was introduced in South Korea in November and in the United States in April, will hit showrooms in China on Aug. 18, the official said on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The premium sedan is expected to directly compete with BMW’s 5-Series, Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volkswagen AG’s Audi in China.

The redesigned Genesis is offered with either a 3.8-liter or a 5-liter gasoline engine. In the U.S., the 3.8-liter model was priced at $40,500 and the 5-liter model was priced at $51,500.

In the first six months of this year, Hyundai sold about 553,000 vehicles in China, up 11 percent compared with the same period last year. (Yonhap)
