Nearly 40 percent of global employers are plagued by talent shortages this year, the highest level since 2007, a survey by an international staffing agency showed.

According to the survey conducted by ManpowerGroup on 37,000 employers in 42 countries and territories, 36 percent of the respondents were having difficulty finding candidates with the right skills to fill open positions.

“Talent shortages continue to persist and are impeding employers’ ability to deliver value for their customers,” said Jonas Prising, CEO of ManpowerGroup.

“Due to the lack of applicants with the right technical competencies, experience and soft skills, one out of three employers struggle to fill open roles. For nearly a decade skilled trades and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)positions are the top 10 hardest jobs to fill, both globally and in the U.S.”

Globally, skilled trade positions have been the most difficult jobs to fill this year, followed by engineers, technicians and sales representatives, the survey showed.

In the Asia-Pacific region, engineer positions topped the list of jobs with talent shortages. Sales representative and skilled trader positions were in second and third places on the list.

Employers in Japan reported the most severe talent shortages with 81 percent while acute shortages were also found in Peru, India and Brazil.

Half of global employers said the talent shortage significantly impacted their ability to meet client needs, ManpowerGroup said.
