South Korean chipmaker SK hynix recouped its position as the world’s No. 2 maker of dynamic random access memory chips in the first quarter of this year, data showed Wednesday, three months after it slipped to the third spot following a fire at its Chinese plant.

The data from market researcher DRAMeXchange showed that SK hynix garnered 28.2 percent of the global DRAM market in the January-March period, outpacing U.S. Micron Technology, which posted 28 percent.

The latest figure marks a turnaround from the fourth quarter of 2013, when Micron took up 28.7 percent of the market to outpace SK hynix’s 23.8 percent.

While SK hynix remained in the second spot in the third quarter of 2013, Micron’s rise came as SK hynix’s production at its chip-making plant in the southern Chinese city of Wuxi was stalled after a fire at the plant in September, with the cause unknown. The facility resumed its full-fledged production in January.

SK hynix also narrowed its gap with Samsung Electronics, which leads the DRAM industry, by posting a market share of 35.5 percent in the first quarter. The gap of 7.3 percentage points between the two is significantly less than the 15.3 percentage point difference posted three months earlier.

While South Korean players accounted for around 65 percent of the global market over the cited period, Taiwan‘s Nanya Technologies, Winbond Electronics and Powerchip Technology also held onto their respective market shares of 3.9 percent, 1.5 percent and 0.9 percent. (Yonhap)
