선내서 시신 대거 발견…"팽목항은 울었다"

하루 동안 시신 수십구 수습…실종자 가족 통곡

항해사·기관장·'가짜 잠수사'·구호품 납품 사기 피의자 등 줄체포

여객선 '세월호' 침몰사고 발생 엿새째인 21일 민·관·군 합동구조팀이 선내 3~4층에서 다수의 시신을 한꺼번에 수습했다.

구조팀이 수중 투입 인원을 늘려 정조시간에 구애받지 않고 24시간 선체 진입을 시도하면서 수색 구조작업을 벌였으나 기적을 기다렸던 실종자 가족은 통곡했다.

진도 해상교통관제센터(VTS)와 교신한 항해사 등 선원 4명을 체포하는 등 검경 합동수사본부의 수사도 속도를 내고 있다.

허위 인터뷰, 실종자 구호품 납품 사기 등으로 국민의 마음에 두번 상처를 준 피의자들도 경찰에 체포됐다.

◇ 팽목항 뒤덮은 절망, 통곡

상당수 실종자들이 갇혀 있을 것으로 추정된 세월호 3~4층에서 시신이 다수 발 견됐다.

민·관·군 특별구조팀은 21일 오후 4층 선미 부분 3개 객실에서 시신 13구, 3 층 라운지에서 10구를 발견해 수습했다.

이 가운데는 외국인 시신 3구(1구는 추정)도 포함됐다.

구조팀은 미리 확보한 진입로를 통해 이날 3~4층에 지속적으로 진입을 시도했다 .

현재까지 사망자는 모두 150명으로 늘었다. 실종자는 152명이다.

시신 발견 소식이 전해지자 수십명의 실종자 가족이 모여들어 대책본부는 긴장 감에 휩싸였다.

사망자 신원발표와 인상착의 설명에 숨소리마저 죽이던 유족은 해경의 사망자 인상착의 설명에 차례로 주저앉아 오열했다.

◇ 수사본부, 항해사 등 4명 체포…가짜 잠수사·구호품 납품 사기 피의자도

검경 합동수사본부는 1등 항해사 강모·신모씨, 2등 항해사 김모씨, 기관장 박 모씨 등 모두 4명을 체포해 조사하고 있다.

수사본부는 유기치사와 수난구호법 위반 혐의를 적용해 22일 중 구속영장을 청 구하는 방안을 검토하고 있다.

강씨는 세월호가 침몰하던 시점에 진도 해상교통안전센터(VTS)와 교신했던 당사 자다.

체포된 4명은 직위와 임무 등에 비춰 구속된 선장 등 다음으로 사고 책임을 물 을 대상으로 수사본부는 판단했다.

전날 밤늦게까지 수사본부에서 조사를 받은 기관사가 모텔에서 자살을 기도한 사건도 발생했다. 기관사는 다행히 구조됐으며 생명에는 지장이 없는 것으로 알려졌다. (연합)

Coast Guard, Navy and civilian divers recovered more than 80 bodies Monday from a sunken ferry off South Korea's southwest coast as they continued a desperate search for missing passengers.

The death toll from the capsized ferry Sewol rose to 150 as of 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, including three foreign victims, as divers focused their search on the third and fourth decks of the five-story vessel, where most of those unaccounted for are believed to have been trapped.

Hundreds of divers struggled to search inside ship for 152 people who remain missing after the 6,825-ton ferry Sewol capsized off the southwestern coast of Jindo on a foggy Wednesday morning.

Of the 476 people on board, only 174 passengers, including the ferry's captain and most of its crew, were rescued after the boat, en route from the western port city of Incheon to the southern resort island of Jeju, listed due to what is believed to have been a sharper than usual turn.

The dining hall on the third floor, in particular, has been cited as one of several areas where many of the passengers are expected to be found, along with lounges and shopping areas.

"So far, divers have set up a total of five guide lines.

Multiple rescue workers have been trying to enter inside the boat at the same time to speed up operations," said Ko Myeong-seok, a spokesman for the government task force handling the disaster, referring to lines that help workers move down to and inside the sunken vessel. (Yonhap)
