영국 소년 ‘재채기’ 하다 숨져

영국의 한 소년이 재채기를 하다 뇌출혈을 일으켜 사망해 주위를 안타깝게 했다. 영국 일간지 데일리 메일은 지난 28일 17살의 리암 앤드류스가 짧은 시간 내에 잇달아 여섯 차례 재채기를 한 후 발작을 일으켜 결국 사망에 이르렀다고 보도했다.

그의 어머니 수잔 앤드류스는 사건 당일 아침 리암이 아래층으로 내려와 잇달아 6번의 재채기를 한 후 심한 두통에 시달렸다고 전했다.

“처음에는 별거 아니라고 생각해서 약을 주겠다고 말했어요. 하지만 아들의 상태는 급작스럽게 나빠졌어요,” 그녀는 말했다.

보도에 따르면 리암은 곧바로 바닥에 쓰려져 구토를 해며 매우 고통스러워 했다. 그의 어머니는 재빨리 앰뷸런스를 불러 리암은 병원으로 후송되었다. 그러나 병원 측에서 응급 뇌수술을 진행하였음에도 불구하고 리암은 수술 4일 뒤 죽음을 맞았다.

아무도 예상하지 못한 리암의 죽음에 주위 사람들은 안타까움을 감추지 못했다. “믿을 수가 없었어요. 리암이 그날 죽을 것이라는 암시나 신호 같은 건 아무것도 없었거든요,” 리암의 어머니가 말했다.

의료 전문가들은 재채기로 인하여 몸이 순간적인 압력을 받을 때 기존에 갖고 있던 혈전이나 골절 같은 질병이 자극받아 죽음까지 이르게 할 수 있다고 설명했다.

그러나 리암은 이와 다르게 기존에 갖고 있던 질병이 없었다. “부검을 요청한 결과 리암은 아무런 질병 없이 건강했어요,” 그의 어머니는 말했다.

의사들은 특별히 기존에 갖고 있던 병이나 상해가 없는 경우에도 순간적으로 뇌가 받는 압박으로 인하여 죽음에 이를 수 있다고 설명하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 일이 발생할 경우는 매우 희박하며, 특히 리암 같은 젊고 건강한 이들에게는 매우 드문 경우라고 전했다.

리암은 죽음을 맞기 약 6개월 전 장기기증 서명을 한 것으로 알려졌다. “아들은 후에 장기 기증을 원한다면 본인도 장기 기증 서약을 해야 한다고 말했었어요. 몇 달 후, 그의 바램을 저희 가족이 대신 이루어줬어요. 저는 리암의 뜻을 존중하고 그를 자랑스럽게 생각합니다,” 그의 어머니가 말했다.

리암은 비록 죽음을 맞았으나 심장, 간, 신장, 췌장 등의 장기 기증을 통해 6명에게 새 생명을 주고 떠났다.

A teenager in England collapsed and died due to a brain hemorrhage caused by sneezing, according to news reports.

Liam Andrews, a 17-year-old boy, had a seizure at home after sneezing six times in quick succession, The Daily Mail reported on March 28.

According to his mother, Suzanne Andrews, Liam came downstairs from his room in the morning, complaining about a headache. He told her that he had just sneezed six times in a row.

“I thought it was nothing serious at first. I told him I would get him some medicine, but his condition got worse very quickly,” she was quoted as saying.

According to the report, Liam soon started to vomit and roll around on the floor. His mother quickly called the ambulance and Liam was sent to a hospital. He underwent brain surgery, but died four days later.

It was a sudden accident that no one anticipated. “I couldn’t believe it. There was nothing to indicate that something like this would happen,” said Mrs. Andrews.

Medical professionals said that because of the strain it puts on the body, a sneeze can cause death due to a pre-existing condition such as a blood clot or a fracture.

However, it turned out that Liam had no preexisting conditions. “I asked for a specialized postmortem and the result was that he was absolutely fine,” Mrs. Andrews recalled.

Doctors say that people can also die from the pressure that builds up in the brain, with no preexisting conditions. Nevertheless, these cases are very rare, especially for someone like Liam, who was young and fit.

It was reported that six months prior to his death, Liam signed up to be an organ donor. “Liam was telling me that people must be prepared to donate organs if you want to receive for yourself. Several months later we fulfilled his wishes. I am proud of Liam for making the decision,” his mother said.

Since his death, six of his organs, including his heart, liver, pancreas and kidneys, have saved the lives of six people.
