Daewoo Engineering & Construction has agreed with the Algerian government to support the country’s handling of urban waste, the amount of which is increasing due to economic growth.

Under the agreement, the Korean builder will draw up a master plan to help the provinces of Blida and Bordj Bou Arreridj build and operate waste disposal infrastructure. It will also seek new joint projects in the areas.

With 800 million won ($750,000) of funding coming from Korea’s Environment Ministry, Daewoo E&C has created a consortium with smaller firms for the 14-month project.

On March 25, a Korean delegation, consisting of representatives from the Environment Ministry, Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute and Daewoo E&C held a meeting with the Algerian authorities on forming a partnership.

“With the enhanced partnership between the two countries, Daewoo E&C and other environment-related Korean companies will have more business opportunities in Algeria,” said a company official.

Daewoo E&C has already proved its competitiveness in the environmental sector in Algeria, as the company carried out a restoration project on the El Harrach, a river that runs through the capital city, Algiers, in 2012.

The $500 million project was the first case of Korea’s river restoration know-how being exported.

“Daewoo E&C was the first Korean builder to enter Algeria,” said the company official. “We will continue to expand our presence in the country by securing more environment improvement projects.”
