Korean Air said Tuesday that it will be joining the carmakers BMW and Ferrari to build sleds for the Korean national bobsleigh team that will compete in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

As an airline company that also produces parts for Boeing and Airbus, Korean Air said it will create a consortium consisting of top experts in Korea and abroad to make two- and four-man sleds and their runners.

The project team will be launched in April and plans to test the first prototype as early as November.

Bobsleds are made of carbon fiber, a stiff, lightweight material. Korean Air has extensive knowledge about the material, which is also widely used in airplane manufacturing.

The new sled project comes as Korean air has continued to support sports events under the leadership of Hanjin Group chairman Cho Yang-ho, who is chief vice chairman of the Korea Olympic Committee.

The chairman is also credited with helping PyeongChang win the bid to host the Winter Games in the mountainous city in Gangwon Province.
