South Korea’s major companies expect business conditions to improve in March as the latest economic indicators show a rise in productivity and better job market conditions, a poll showed Thursday.

The business survey index came to 104.4 for next month, up sharply from the 88.7 forecast for February, according to the poll of the largest 600 companies by sales, conducted by the Federation of Korean Industries.

A BSI reading above the benchmark 100 mark means optimists outnumber pessimists.

The index has been below 100 since November last year after hitting 101.1 the month before.

“The rise in the number of people hired in January, which reached 705,000, and the 2.6 percent increase in industrial output in the fourth quarter of last year vis-a-vis the previous three months played a part in the higher BSI reading,” said Kim Yong-ok, head of the FKI’s economic policy team.
