The alleged mistress of former Prosecutor General Chae Dong-wook may have received a massive amount of money from a close friend of Chae, local media reported Thursday citing unnamed sources.
According to reports, prosecutors have found that the mistress, surnamed Lim, took 120 million won ($111,000) through the account of her son, who is believed to be Chae’s love child. Lim allegedly sent back some of the money received. The prosecution said it is investigating why and how the money was transferred.
The initial transaction reportedly took place after Lim had visited Chae’s office in Daejeon claiming to be his wife in 2010. Chae served as the chief of the Daejoen High Prosecutors’ Office from 2009 to 2012.
The man who transferred the money has been identified by his surname Lee. He is known to be an old high school friend of Chae’s, and the two are still in close contact, the reports said.
According to reports, prosecutors found the evidence while investigating the mistress, who allegedly threatened her housekeeper for revealing Chae’s extramarital affair.
She is also being accused of requesting a special consideration of lawsuits to prosecutors on behalf of her acquaintances, in return for money and goods.
Chae stepped down from his post last September after a local newspaper raised suspicions that he had a son out of wedlock.
Chae has denied all allegations saying that he never knew about the boy’s existence.
The main opposition Democratic Party has been claiming that Cheong Wa Dae and the national spy agency may be pulling the strings behind the scenes.
