고양이 애호가를 가장해 십 수 마리의 고양이를 입양해 그 고기를 먹은 50세 이태리 남성이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.
27일(현지시간) 현지 언론에 따르면 이 남성은 지난 수개월간 최소 15마리의 고양이를 다수의 유기 고양이 보호소에서 입양했다고 동물복지단체인 아이다(Aidaa)가 밝혔다.

이 같은 범행은 입양된 고양이를 대상으로 정기적으로 이뤄지는 사후 상태 조사를 남성이 지속적으로 회피하자 이에 의혹을 품은 보호소 관계자에 의해 덜미가 잡혔다.
아이다 직원들은 남성의 집을 불시 검문해, 때마침 남성이 고양이를 죽여 요리를 만들려던 현장을 덮쳤다.
상습범인 이 남성은 “통통한 체구에 약 3살 정도 된 검은 고양이만을 입양해갔다”고 현지 언론이 아이다 회장인 로렌초 크로체의 말을 인용, 보도했다.
“이 남성은 그간 검은 고양이를 죽여 여러 친구들과 함께 나누어 먹었다고 자백했다”고 크로체 회장은 덧붙였다.
붙잡힌 남성은 동물 학대 혐의로 체포됐으며 현지법상 일년 이하의 징역 또는 한화로 약 2,200만원의 벌금형을 받을 수 있다.

A 50-year-old Italian man was arrested for posing as a cat lover to adopt cats to obtain feline meat, a local daily reported on Monday.
Animal welfare organization Aidaa said the man adopted at least 15 cats from multiple provincial animal shelters over several months.
The man’s atrocities came to an end when the local authorities became suspicious of the man repeatedly excusing himself from the regular checks on the welfare of the adopted cats.
Aidaa investigators carried out a surprise check at the man’s home and “caught him in the act” of preparing to kill a cat for food, local paper La Stampa reported.
The man adopted “black cats with specific characteristics. They had to be around 3 years old, and quite plump,” Aidaa president Lorenzo Croce was quoted as saying.
“He even admitted to killing black cats and eating them in the company of friends,” Croce added.
