Labor and civic groups urged the state-run rail operator Monday to stop suppressing unionized rail workers for having participated in what the government called an illegal strike.

The call came as Korea Railroad Corp. management took disciplinary and legal actions against the union for financial losses incurred from the three-week-long strike that ended in late December.

“KORAIL is conducting an all-out offensive against the union by referring 523 union members to a disciplinary committee and filing a compensation suit,” a coalition of 25 labor and civic organizations said in a statement read during a press conference in Seoul.

KORAIL unionists face tough disciplinary measures for their participation in the strike, which protested a government plan to establish a subsidiary to run some high-speed train services.

The union suspects the move is a precursor to rail privatization.

The management also filed the suit against the union for financial losses incurred from the strike, estimating them to be around 15.2 billion won ($14.7 million). (Yonhap News)
