전 세계 유명 문인들이 디지털 시대에 적용 가능한 새로운 권리장전을 만들어야 한다고 청원하며 미국 국가안보국 등의 도청 행위를 비판하는 데에 나섰다.
외신들은 81개국, 560명으로 구성된 세계 작가들이 대중 감시에 반대한다며 개인의 사생활 권리를 존중해달라는 입장을 밝혔다.
81개국, 560명의 작가들이 동참하여 이런 입장을 담은 공개 서한을 미국 오바마 대통령, 애플과 구글 그리고 페이스북 등에 보낼 계획이라고 알려졌다.
이 캠페인에는 오르한 파묵, 귄터 그라스 등의 노벨문학상 수상자들과 움베르토 에코, 마가렛 애트우드 등 유명 작가들이 다수 참여한다.
