갈라에서도 주인공은 김연아…금빛 스핀으로 마무리

'골든 스핀 오브 자그레브'를 마무리하는 잔치 무대에서도 주인공은 단연 '피겨여왕' 김연아(23)였다.

대회 일정이 모두 끝나고 갈라쇼가 이어진 8일(한국시간) 크로아티아 자그레브의 돔 스포르토바 빙상장.

출연자 중 가장 마지막인 15번째로 등장한 김연아가 올 시즌 갈라프로그램인 '이매진' 맞춰 연기를 마무리하고 링크를 빠져나가자, 갑자기 장내에 한국어 메시지가 울렸다.

대회 조직위원회가 한국어 통역을 통해 공식적으로 김연아를 향해 감사의 인사를 전한 것이다.

조직위는 이것도 모자라 유일하게 김연아만 한 차례 다시 링크로 모시며 관객들에게 인사할 기회를 주는 등 10년 만에 찾아온 피겨 여왕을 극진히 대우했다.

그 이유는 이날 경기장 분위기만 살펴봐도 알 수 있다.

다른 경기가 열릴 때에는 3분의 1도 채우지 못하던 객석은 이날 갈라쇼가 열릴 때에는 어느새 가득 들어차 있었다.

모든 경기를 마치고 홀가분한 선수들이 흥에 넘치는 연기를 펼치자 객석도 함께 들썩였다.

김연아라는 슈퍼스타의 등장으로 대회가 흥행 대성공을 거둔 것이다.

올림픽 시즌의 첫 대회를 무사히 마친 김연아도 팬들과 호흡하며 모처럼 어깨에 진 짐을 내려놓았다.

이날 김연아는 올림픽 갈라프로그램인 '이매진'을 공연했다. 1990년대 치른 내전의 상흔이 남아 있는 크로아티아에 전한 김연아만의 평화의 메시지였다.

올해 6월 아이스쇼에서 초연했을 때에는 순백의 드레스를 입었지만, 이날은 푸른빛이 도는 드레스에 보석 장식까지 달아 화려한 느낌을 더했다.

공연을 마친 뒤 모든 참가자와 함께 링크에 들어선 김연아는 펜스 주위로 모여든 팬들과 손바닥을 마주 부딪치며 감사의 인사를 전했다.

Kim Yu-na cruises to victory in season debut

South Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na cruised to an overwhelming victory in her highly-anticipated season debut in Croatia on Saturday, despite committing an early mistake in her free skating program.

Kim scored 131.12 points in Saturday's free skate for a totalof 204.49 points to capture the Golden Spin of Zagreb at Dom Sportova arena in the Croatian capital. On Friday, she earned 73.37 points in the short program, the highest short program score by anyone this season.

The total score was the fifth highest in Kim's decorated career. She has now surpassed 200 points in her last three international competitions.

The easy win set Kim on the right track in her preparation for the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia in February. The 23-year-old is the reigning Olympic gold medalist and two-time world champion, and will attempt to become only the third woman to repeat as the Olympic champion.

Kim has already said Sochi will be her last Olympics.

Miki Ando of Japan finished a distant second at 176.82 points.

Ando picked up 114.01 points in free skating on Saturday after earning 62.81 points in the short program a day earlier.

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia was third with 169.24 points.

She scored 110,43 points in free skating.

Kim reached the top of the podium despite a fall on her first jump combination, triple lutz-triple toe loop, in the free skating routine, choreographed to a tango piece titled "Adios Nonino." She recovered to nail the rest of her jumps cleanly and execute smooth steps and spins.

This was the first event of the season for Kim, who in September suffered a foot injury that forced her to withdraw from two scheduled appearances during the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix season in October and November. The unexpected setback threatened to derail Kim's preparations for Sochi, but she returned to dominate the field in Croatia this week.

Despite the convincing margin of victory, Kim said that she wasn't entirely happy with her performance on Saturday.

"It wasn't too bad for a first event of the season but I was shaky," Kim said. "I panicked after making a mistake on the very first jump, which is the most important one, and I was really tight the rest of the way. Be it jumps, spins or steps, I wasn't very smooth on many of them."

Kim admitted there is still room for improvement with her conditioning level, but added that she has enough time left until Sochi to work herself into top form. (Yonhap News)
