스웨덴 외교관, 北억류 뉴먼 방문…"건강상태 양호"

평양 주재 스웨덴 외교관들이 북한 당국에 한 달 이상 억류된 미국인 메릴 뉴먼(85)씨를 30일(현지시간) 방문했다고 그의 가족 등이 밝혔다.

평양 주재 스웨덴 대사관은 이날 북한으로부터 뉴먼씨에 대한 영사접근을 허가 받았다고 AFP통신과 CNN방송 등이 미국 국무부를 인용해 보도했다.

뉴먼 씨가 북한에 억류된 이후 서방 관리들이 그를 면담한 것은 이번이 처음이다.

평양 주재 스웨덴 대사관은 북한 내 미국 시민과 관련된 문제에서 미국의 '이익 대표국'(protecting power) 역할을 하고 있다.

가족들은 북한 주재 스웨덴 대사가 뉴먼씨가 거처하는 평양의 양각도 호텔을 방문, 의약품을 전달했다는 사실을 국무부로부터 전해들었다고 성명을 통해 밝혔다.

가족들은 "방문 결과로 메릴의 건강 상태가 양호하다는 사실을 알게 됐다"며 " 메릴은 좋은 대접을 받고 있고 음식도 괜찮다고 이야기했다고 한다"고 전했다.

이들은 스웨덴 대사에게 감사를 표하고서 "인도주의적 연민에 따라 그의 건강 상태와 나이를 고려, 즉시 집으로 돌아올 수 있도록 허용해 달라"고 북한 당국에 촉구했다.

한국전쟁 참전용사로 심장 질환을 앓는 뉴먼씨는 지난달 26일 열흘간의 북한 관광을 마치고 평양에서 베이징행 비행기가 이륙하기 직전 체포됐다.

미국 백악관은 이날 성명을 내고 뉴먼 씨의 즉각 석방을 촉구했다.

케이틀린 헤이든 백악관 국가안보회의(NSC) 보좌관은 "뉴먼 씨의 고령과 건강 상태를 고려해 그가 가족의 품에 돌아갈 수 있게 즉각 석방할 것을 북한 당국에 요구한다"고 밝혔다.

앞서 북한은 이날 뉴먼 씨가 죄를 인정하고 사죄의 뜻을 밝혔다며 사죄문 전문을 공개했다.

조선중앙통신은 이날 발표한 보도에서 "최근 우리 공화국의 해당 기관에서는 관광객으로 들어와 적대행위를 감행한 미국 공민 메릴 에드워드 뉴먼을 단속, 억류했다"며 "그의 대조선 적대행위는 여러 증거물에 의해 입증됐고 그는 자기의 모든 죄과에 대해 인정하고 사죄했다"고 밝혔다.

백악관은 북한에 1년 이상 억류된 또 다른 미국 시민권자인 케네스 배(한국명 배준호)씨의 석방도 함께 재촉했다.

North Korea allowed a Swedish diplomat to meet with the 85-year-old U.S. citizen who has been detained in the communist country for more than a month, media reports monitored in Seoul said Sunday.

News wire services such as AFP and CNN said a consul met Merrill Newman at a hotel in Pyongyang and delivered medication sent by his family.

The Scandinavian country's mission in Pyongyang acts as the "protecting power" for Americans in North Korea, and its diplomats provide consular services.

The media outlets said Newman was in good health and reported he was being treated well by the North Koreans.

Pyongyang reported the day before that the former veteran of the Korean War (1950-53) apologized for committing "hostile acts against the DPRK and masterminding unspecified espionage and subversive activities."

The DPRK stands for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

The report then said that Newman's family thanked the Swedish ambassador in Pyongyang for his help.

Washington said on Saturday that the North must release Newman immediately.

He has been detained in the North since Oct. 26 after he was removed from a plane preparing to leave for Beijing. Newman had just completed a 10-day trip in the country.

In addition to the detainee, who has not been formally charged, the United States asked once again for the release of Kenneth Bae, a 40-year-old Korean-American man, who has been detained in the country for more than a year.
