'심슨' 바트 담임役 성우 폐렴 합병증으로 사망

미국 폭스(FOX)TV의 유명 애니메이션 '심슨네 가족들(The Simpsons)'에서 바트의 담임 선생님을 맡은 성우 마르시아 월리스가 지난 25일(현지시간) 폐렴 합병증으로 세상을 떠났다고 외신들이 보도했다. 향년 70세.

'심슨네 가족들'의 제작자 알 진은 "바트 심슨과 끊임없이 씨름한 초등학교 4학년 담임 선생님을 맡은 그의 '대체 불가능한 캐릭터'는 프로그램을 떠나게 됐다"며 "월리스의 죽음은 그를 아는 기쁨을 누린 모든 이들에게 끔찍한 손실"이라고 애도를 표했다.

아이오와주 크레스턴 출신인 월리스는 1970년대 큰 인기를 끈 '더 밥 뉴하트 쇼(The Bob Newhart Show)'로 인지도를 쌓아 이후 '풀 하우스(Full House)', '택시(Taxi)', '머피 브라운(Murphy Brown)' 같은 TV쇼에 출연했다.

그는 '심슨네 가족들'에서 바트의 담임 선생님인 에드나 크라바펠의 목소리를 맡았으며, 이 캐릭터가 종종 내뱉는 '하!'라는 감탄사는 그의 전매특허가 됐다.

월리스는 이 역할로 1992년 프라임타임 에미상을 받는 영광을 누렸다.

Marcia Wallace dies, voice of 'Simpsons' Krabappel

LOS ANGELES -- Marcia Wallace, the voice of scoffing schoolteacher Edna Krabappel on ``The Simpsons,'' whose wise-cracking characters on ``The Bob Newhart Show'' and other prime-time hits endeared her to generations of TV viewers, has died.

`Simpsons'' executive producer Al Jean said in a statement Saturday that her ``irreplaceable character,'' the fourth-grade teacher who contended with Bart Simpson's constant antics, would be retired from the show. Wallace was 70.

``I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace. She was beloved by all at `The Simpsons,''' Jean said. It's ``a terrible loss for all who had the pleasure of knowing her.''

The statement did not provide a date for her death, or a cause.

The longtime TV actress' credits ranged from playing a receptionist on ``The Bob Newhart Show'' to appearances on Candice Bergen's ``Murphy Brown.''

On ``The Simpsons,'' Wallace provided the voice for world-weary Edna Krabappel, who smoked cigarettes, made sarcastic comments and finally found love in the arms of Simpson's neighbor Ned Flanders after fans voted online at the end of season 22 to keep the unlikely couple together.

Wallace's trademark ``Ha!'' punctuated Krabappel's frequent wisecracks, and her character was also known for the catchphrase, ``Do what I mean, not what I say.''

Harry Shearer, the voice of Ned Flanders on the show, said Wallace ``brought this huge, positive energy'' to her work on ``The Simpsons.''

``She was just a warm and wonderful person,'' Shearer told The Associated Press. (AP)
