South Korea’s second-largest public broadcaster MBC will open a radio station in Nepal next month as part of joint efforts with other Korean firms to help improve the Nepalese people’s quality of life, the broadcaster said Monday.

The radio station named “Mustang Broadcasting Community” will open at Mustang in northwest Nepal on Oct. 4 after one and a half years of construction in which many broadcasting and construction experts participated as talent donors, MBC said.

The broadcaster, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and Lafuma, an outdoor fashion brand of LG Fashion, financed the 1 billion won ($930,450) project.

Construction was conducted with the aim of using construction materials and workers from Nepal, and making the station go well with the local environment. However, this also caused the opening to be postponed several times due to a limited supply of construction materials and bad natural conditions at the site, according to MBC.

When completed, the radio station will produce programs for Mustang residents as well as mountaineers coming to hike Annapurna, a section of the Himalayas in north-central Nepal, the company said.

The construction process has been made into a TV documentary that will be broadcast in late October, according to the company.

“We pushed for the project to build a broadcasting station as part of efforts to upgrade the cultural life of the donation beneficiary, a step forward from Korea’s traditional method of providing food, education and medical services in aid,” an MBC official in charge of the project said.
