N. Korean leader inspects islet garrison near inter-Korean sea border

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspected a front-line garrison on an islet near the inter-Korean sea border, a media report said Wednesday.
The report by the Korean Central News Agency said Kim checked barracks, living quarters, schools and clinics, and lauded soldiers guarding the Wolnae Islet for their dedication to duty. The islet lies just 11 kilometers from South Korea's northernmost island of Baengnyeong along the northern limit line (NLL).
The report marks the second consecutive day that Pyongyang has covered its leader's visit to a Korean People's Army (KPA) outpost in the Yellow Sea.
On Tuesday, the North said Kim toured the Jangjae and Mu islets that lie just a few kilometers north of the NLL. The two islets were involved in the shelling of nearby Yeonpyeong Island in November 2010, which left four people dead.
During the visit to Wolnae Islet, the leader also inspected a firebase and observation post where he informed the soldiers of the importance of preparedness in modern warfare and the need to make their positions impervious to attack.
He, however, did not make any threatening remarks toward the South, which is in contrast to the order he issued when he last visited Wolnae in March of this year.
At that time, he called on the KPA to be ready to completely destroy the South Korean Marine brigade stationed on Baengnyeong if the order is given.
Related to the latest trip, an official at the Seoul Ministry of Unification said there seems to be a pattern of Kim visiting places he had been in the past to check if the orders he had given were followed through.
On the lack of belligerent rhetoric, the official, who did not want to be identified, said it reflected the easing of tensions between the two Koreas in recent months. (Yonhap News)
