The SM5 TCE or Turbo Charged Efficiency is the culmination of the carmaker’s efforts to meet the new demands of Korean customers ― a more fuel efficient SM5 that seeks no compromise on power.

The SM5 TCE, launched in June, is the latest version of the company’s best-selling family car SM5 and is the nation’s first midsize sedan that has been equipped with a downsized 1.6-liter engine.

The company said that top engineers from Korea, France, Japan and Germany teamed up to create the Renault-brand model.

Taking advantage of the strategic partnership between Renault and Nissan, the Korean team decided to adopt a smaller 1.6-liter engine in the SM5 Platinum, which used to be powered by 2.0-liter or bigger engines.

The key to more efficient power was the unique combination of Nissan’s 1.6-liter GDi turbo charger engine and Getrag’s six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The downsized engine comes with bigger numbers: 190 horsepower and a fuel efficiency of 13 kilometers per liter, compared with 141 and 12.6, respectively, for the 2.0-liter engine of the conventional SM5.

“The team focused not just on elevating overall power but also on improving fuel efficiency and noise issues,” said an RSM official. “We believed that a successful model in Korea would become a success story in overseas markets as well.”

In the first month after its launch, more than 1,200 SM5 TCE cars were sold, according to the company.

While the existing SM5 Platinum was favored by female drivers due to its driving comfort and convenience, the sportier TCE version is gaining positive reviews from men in their 20s and 30s.

The price tag of 27.1 million won ($24,230) is also attractive, as it cheaper than many of its rivals in the same segment, including a full-option Sonata.

The company said the fuel rating at 13 kilometers per liter is one of the best in the midsize segment and the smaller engine lowers the annual auto ownership tax on the vehicle.

“The SM5 TCE, based on an innovative engine-downsizing technology, reaffirms the competitiveness of Renault Samsung Motors in Korea. The car will be leading our next big leap,” said the official.
