Crayon Pop inks deal with Sony Music Entertainment
Crayon Pop, a rising girl group in South Korea, has signed a contract with Sony Music Entertainment for its overseas expansion.
On a visit to Korea in July to explore Korea’s music industry, officials from U.S.-based Sony Music Entertainment met with Crayon Pop and noticed the potential of the five-member group, Sony said.
Under the contract, Sony will manage Crayon Pop’s activities outside of Korea.
“Signing a contract with the world-famous label Sony Music Entertainment will be a great opportunity for Crayon Pop’s development and growth,” said Chrome Entertainment representing the group.
Crayon Pop made their debut in 2012, and gained popularity this year with their second single “Bar Bar Bar,” released on June 20.
The group quickly rose to public attention for their “Bar Bar Bar” music video, in which they wear motorcycle helmets as they sing. Their overall fashion -- polo shirts and sweatpants -- also stood out compared with other South Korean girl groups that stress sexy and cute images.
Crayon Pop’s music video, featuring an addictive melody and comic dance moves, has gone viral on social networks including Facebook and Twitter.
Sony Music Entertainment, which has also signed Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Avril Lavigne and Usher, is currently searching for promising K-pop artists.
