S. Korea reaches quarterfinals at Asian men's basketball championship

South Korea routed Kazakhstan 71-47 to reach the quarterfinals at the Asian men's basketball championship on Tuesday.
Guards Kim Min-goo and Kim Sun-hyung each scored a team-high 14 points, and forward Cho Sung-min chipped in 12 points in second-round action of the FIBA Asia Championships for Men at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines.
South Korea improved to 3-1 in the tournament and is ranked second among six nations in Group F, behind the 4-0 Iran. The top four teams from the group will reach the quarters, joined by the top four nations from Group E. Regardless of the result against India in its final game on Wednesday night, South Korea will be among the final eight in the tournament.
South Korea had reached the second round as the No. 2 seed from Group C, after beating China and Malaysia.
South Korea held a slim 16-14 lead after the opening quarter against Kazakhstan, but opened a 38-27 lead at halftime with tight defense and solid perimeter shooting.
South Korea then held Kazakhstan to just nine points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Jerri Johnson, an American-born guard now playing for Kazakhstan, netted 15 points for his adopted country, but no other player reached double figures.
South Korea will play India at 10:30 p.m. local time, and 11:30 p.m. Korean time. South Korea must finish in the top three in Asia to qualify for its first FIBA Basketball World Cup in 16 years.
