Foreign diplomats here in Korea on Saturday visited Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, the host city of the 2018 Winter Olympics, for a Korean cultural experience.
About 80 envoys including ambassadors attended the Great Mountains Music Festival & School, a classical music concert, at the Music Tent in Alpensia Resort, Pyeongchang, on Saturday evening.
Performers included the festival artistic director and violinist Chung Kyung-wha, pianists Son Yeol-eum and Kim Da-sol, and others.
Then, they moved to a nearby hotel for a cocktail reception hosted by Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.
Their visit came at the ministry’s invitation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has invited foreign envoys every year since 2004 to provincial events to introduce Korean and provincial culture as well as to build closer relationships with them.
The ministry chose Pyeongchang for this year to drum up foreign diplomats’ interest in the 2018 Winter Olympics and secure cooperation from their countries regarding the games.
On Monday, the foreign diplomats were to tour a nearby temple, Woljeongsa, together with senior officials of the ministry and have Korean food.
