SK Telecom Co., South Korea’s leading mobile operator, said that it plans to expand its next-generation mobile network service to more cities in the country to meet growing demand for faster Internet connectivity.
For the first time in the world, SK Telecom introduced the so-called LTE-Advanced mobile network in the country on June 26, 2013, offering speeds twice as fast as the existing long-term evolution, or LTE, network.
The LTE-Advanced service is currently available in Seoul, 65 other major cities and 103 universities across the nation.
The service will be expanded to 84 cities, SK Telecom said.
The company earlier said it had attracted more than 150,000 subscribers to its LTE-Advanced mobile network in just 14 days since its launch.
Early this month, LG Uplus Corp., the country’s smallest mobile carrier, also introduced its LTE-Advanced service.
SK Telecom said more customers are expected to pick the service down the road as smartphone makers are set to release a flurry of LTE-Advanced-based smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. (Yonhap News)
