Police certificate to be mandatory in traffic accidents

Traffic accident victims may in the future have to report all damage to the police for insurance coverage, no matter how minor it is.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on Monday that it was working on revising the traffic law to obligate policyholders to submit a police certificate before making their insurance claim.
Under the current law, no report is necessary as long as the resulting injuries are light and both parties reach an agreement on compensation.
“Cases of insurance fraud crimes and false insurance claims are on the rise, as public organs have little certifying authority,” said a ministry official.
The ministry is currently holding working-level negotiations with the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Security and Public Administration, the National Police Agency and the Financial Services Commission, according to officials.
The FSC, however, expressed concerns that these additional prerequisites may be too harsh for traffic accident victims.
