Kim Young-soo, president of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games Organizing Committee, visited the Yonsei Global Campus in Incheon on Tuesday to encourage volunteers for the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games to keep up their good work, the committee said.
He also asked them to come back again to work as volunteers for next year‘s Incheon Asian Games.
Kim looked around the worksite of Moon Seung-ju, one of volunteers who works at the athletes’ village on the campus.
The 21-year-old sophomore of Gwangju University came from Hwasun, South Jeolla Province, about 330 km from the campus. He is a volunteer manager of inventory in a warehouse and also assists the distribution of goods. He has meals in the warehouse and sleeps on a camp bed there.
Moon has experience of volunteering for high-profile events. He worked as volunteer manager of facilities during the Yeosu Expo last year. He has worked as a volunteer for the Games since June 19.
“In the beginning, I had a hard time living here because it was difficult to go to a place where I could wash my hands and face. But as I am getting used to my life here as well as my job, I have few difficulties these days,” Moon said. ”I hope there will be a space where volunteers or on-the-scene workers can make suggestions as needs arise.“
”The Games operation is being stabilized thanks to volunteers who sweat it out despite difficult conditions,“ Kim said. ”I ask you to return home with good personal memories as well as to gain work experience. I also ask you to come back to work for the next year’s Asian Games.“
The organizing committee will select 60 exemplary volunteers and award them with prizes after the games come to a close.
