유명 일본 작가 무라카미 하루키의 새 장편소설 “색채가 없는 다자키 쓰쿠루와 그가 순례를 떠난 해”가 1일 출간과 동시에 국내 베스트셀러 1위에 올랐다.

소설은 30대 남성 다자키 쓰쿠루가 고등학교 시절 절친했던 친구들과 왜 갑자기 관계가 틀어졌는지를 찾아가는 과정을 그린다. 몇 년간의 고통스러운 시간을 보낸 뒤 그는 도쿄의 한 철도회사에서 기차역을 디자인하며 생계를 이어가고 있었다. 어느 날, 그는 한 때 그의 가장 친한 친구들이었던 사람들을 하나씩 찾아가 그들의 관계가 갑작스레 끝난 이유를 알아보기로 결심한다.

무라카미 하루키의 신작은 월요일 출시와 함께 예스24, 인터넷 교보문고, 알라딘을 포함한 국내 주요 온라인 서점들의 베스트셀러 목록 1위에 올랐다. 예스24에 따르면, 대략 3500부가 6월 24일부터 예약판매되었다.

한편, 오프라인에서는 교보문고 광화문점이 월요일 정오 처음으로 신작을 판매하기 시작했다.

1일 2시, 진영균 교보문고 관계자는 “대략 4850부 이상 판매 된 것 같다”며 “이 중 3000부 정도는 온라인 예약판매를 통해 판매되었고, 1000부 정도는 일본어 원서로 판매되었다. 어떤 국내 독자들은 한국어판의 출시를 기다리기보다 일본어 판을 구매한 것 같다.”고 전했다.

알려진 바에 따르면 한국어 판을 출판한 민음사는 이번 소설의 한국어 판권을 지키기 위해 문학동네, 김영 출판사 등 국내 유력 출판사들과 치열하게 경쟁했다.

민음사는 판권에 지불한 금액을 밝히기를 거절했다. 그러나 현지 매체가 보도한 바에 따르면 한국 출판사가 최소한 1억 5000만 엔을 지불한 것으로 전해졌다.

민음사는 초판 20만부 중에 18만부가 7월 1일 출시 이전에 국내 서점들을 통해 선 판매되었으며 이날 5만부 재쇄에 들어간다고 말했다.

무라카미 하루키의 소설들은 “노르웨이의 숲” (1987)과 “해변의 카프카” (2002)를 포함해 한국에서 많은 인기를 누렸다. 그가 2011년 발표한 소설 “1Q84” 는 국내에서 2백만 부가 넘게 판매되었다. 그리고 “해변의 카프카”를 원작으로 한 연극이 올해 초 서울 대학로 극장에서 무대에 올려졌다.

민음사가 전한 바에 따르면 교보문고 광화문점에서 1일 소설을 최초로 구매한 사람은 25살의 대학생 탁신형씨다.

김수진 민음사 관계자는 “그가 일요일 저녁 9시쯤 서점을 방문하더니 다음 날 오전 5시에 도서의 첫 구매자가 되기 위해 나타났습니다.”고 전했다.

이 날 민음사는 최초 구매자 10명에게 무라카미 사인본을 증정했다.

Murakami’s latest novel tops best selling list on the day of its Korean release

The Korean edition of famed Japanese writer Haruki Murakami’s latest novel “Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage” topped the local bestseller lists on the day of its release Monday.

The novel tells the story of a 30-something man named Tsukuru Tazaki,, who was suddenly cut off by his close friends while attending high school. After being terminally depressed for many years, he now makes a living designing train stations at a railway company in Tokyo. He one day decides to visit his once best friends, one by one, to find out exactly why their relations were so suddenly terminated.

The book was released on Monday morning and instantly topped the nation’s bestseller lists provided by major online bookstores, including Yes24, Kyobo Book Centre, and Aladdin. According to Yes24, some 3,500 copies had been pre-ordered since June 24.

Kyobo Book Centre’s Gwanghwamun branch, on the other hand, was the first bookstore to sell the Korean edition of the novel at noon on Monday.

“We sold about 4,850 copies so far,” said Jin Young-kyun from Kyobo Book Centre at 2 p.m. on Monday. “This number includes the online pre-orders, which were about 3,000, as well as some 1,000 copies of Japanese editions. It seems like some local readers decided to purchase the Japanese editions earlier as they didn’t want to wait for the Korean edition’s release.”

The book’s Korean publisher Minumsa reportedly competed fiercely with the nation’s top publishing houses, including Munhagdongne Publishing Group and Gimmyoung Publishers, to secure the rights to publish the Korean edition of the novel.

Minumsa refused to disclose how much it paid for the rights, but it has been reported by the local media outlets that the Korean publishing house paid at least 150 million yen.

Minumsa said among the 200,000 copies it has printed, 180,000 had been pre-ordered by local bookstores prior to the official release date, July 1. The publishing house is printing an additional 50,000 copies, Minumsa said.

The Japanese writer’s novels, including “Norwegian Wood,” (1987) and “Kafka on the Shore” (2002), have been enjoying much popularity in Korea. His 2011 novel “1Q84” sold more than 2 million copies here, and the Korean theater adaptation of “Kafka on the Shore” was staged in Seoul’s Daehangno theater district earlier this year.

According to Minumsa, the first person who purchased the novel at Kyobo Book Centre’s Gwanghwamun Branch on Monday was Tak Shin-hyeong, a 25-year-old college student. The publishing house presented a total of 10 special editions of the novel, autographed by Murakami, to the first 10 customers at the bookstore on Monday.

“He visited the bookstore at 9 p.m. on Sunday, and showed up at 5 a.m. on Monday to be the first one to purchase the book,” said Kim Soo-jin from Minumsa.
