한국, 중국, 미국, 그리고 일본은 월요일, 핵무기 프로그램을 포기하고 실질적 진행을 위한 대화로 돌아오라며 북한에 촉구했다.

중국의 왕이 외교부장은 부르나이에서의 아세안 지역 포럼에 앞서 북한의 박의춘 외무상과 회담을 열었다.

박씨는 한 시간 동안 회담을 다시 열고자 하는 평양의 입장을 되풀이했다고 예측된다. 왕 부장은 남한, 미국, 일본 그리고 러시아를 포함한 여섯 국가의 비핵화 포럼을 재개하자고 말했다.

제각기 모인 남한, 미국, 그리고 일본의 외무부 장관들은 핵무기가 존재하지 않는 한국을 만들기 위한 각 나라의 약속을 재차 확인했다. “중국은 물론 한반도의 비핵화를 위해 힘쓰고 있고, 이것이 변함없는 우리 정부의 입장이다,” 왕 부장은 회담 후 기자들에게 간략히 전했다.

한반도의 비핵화를 위한 여섯 국가의 회담은 필수적이다. 중국정부는 대화를 통해 한반도 문제가 해결되는 방향으로 갈 수 있도록 관련 국가들이 여건을 만들어나가기 시작하길 바란다.”

중국은 최근 몇 달간 무력의 과시와 핵무기의 야망, 그리고 협상으로 인해 압력을 받고 있었다.

지난주 그들의 첫번째 정상회담 기간 동안, 박근혜 대통령과 그녀의 북 대응자 시진핑은 평양의 무자비한 핵 개발이 지역의 “평화와 안정을 위협한다”와, 한반도의 비핵화가 그들의 “공통된 관심사”라는 의견에 동의했다.

중국의 시진핑 주석과 미국 오바마 대통령 또한 지난 달 캘리포니아에서 열린 회담에서 북한을 핵무장 국가인 것을 인정하지 않을것을 약속했다.

Powers urge N.K. to drop nuclear programs

 BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei -- China, the U.S, South Korea and Japan on Monday urged North Korea to relinquish its nuclear programs and return to dialogue for substantive progress.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with his North Korean counterpart Pak Ui-chun ahead of the ASEAN Regional Forum in Brunei.

During the one-hour session, Pak is forecast to have reiterated Pyongyang’s willingness to reopen talks. Wang once again called for a restart of the six-nation denuclearization forum also involving South Korea, the U.S., Japan and Russia.

The foreign ministers of South Korea, the U.S. and Japan gathered separately later in the day and reaffirmed their commitment to a nuclear-free Korea.

“Of course China is striving for the goal of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and this is our unchanged stance,” Wang told reporters shortly after the meeting.

“The six-party talks are necessary for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. China is hoping that each of the concerned countries set out to form conditions so that the peninsula issue will return to the orbit of resolution through dialogue.”

China has in recent months been piling pressure on its intractable ally to do away with saber-rattling and nuclear ambitions and come back to the negotiating table.

During their first summit last week, President Park Geun-hye and her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed that Pyongyang’s atomic development “threatens peace and stability” in the region and the denuclearization of the peninsula is in their “common interests.”

Xi and U.S. President Barack Obama also vowed not to accept North Korea as a nuclear-armed state at a meeting last month in California.
