Having good English proficiency has long been a task for many South Koreans, as it has huge effects on one’s life such as promotions or high exam scores. Korean learners are actively using English TV series since they are both entertaining and educational. The Korea Herald has summed up the three most popular English series in Korea that draw wide interest from enthusiastic English learners. 



1. “Modern Family”

“Modern Family” is a U.S. comedy series first aired in 2009. The story revolves around three branches of the same family with different structures: a typical nuclear family, a gay couple and a second-marriage family.

The TV series is particularly loved by beginning English students since the main characters mostly speak in slow, clear tones. It also helps learners practice using standard English as the characters do not use much slang.




2. “Miranda”

“Miranda” is a popular British sitcom featuring Miranda, an optimistic 35-year-old woman over 6 feet tall. It comically portrays daily lives of Miranda and the people around her.

Having the same name as the TV character, British comedian Miranda Hart in the show speaks with exaggerated gestures that make it easier for Korean fans to understand. Each episode runs for about 30 minutes, about half the length of the average Korean drama.



3. “Glee”

“Glee” is an American high school musical drama which recently finished its fourth season last month. Set at William McKinley High School, members of the school’s glee club compete in choir competitions while dealing with various issues including love, friendship and family.

Since “Glee” is a musical drama, it has several songs in each episode that are easy to sing along with for listeners. People often find the songs in “Glee” amusing and less stressful for memorizing English vocabulary or expressions through music.
