입시비리에 개입했다는 의혹으로 검찰수사를 받아온 영훈국제중학교의 현직 교감이 어제밤 학교 안에서 스스로 목숨을 끊었다.

어제밤 7시쯤 서울 강북구에 있는 영훈국제중학교에서 현직 교감인 54살 김모씨가 숨진 채 발견되었다.

그는 학교 1층 계단 난간에 목을 매 숨졌고, 다음날 학교 경비원이 발견해 신고했다.

김 교감은 2013학년도 영훈국제중 입학전형에서 특정 학생을 합격시키기 위해 성적을 조작한 혐의로 검찰 수사를 받아왔다.

현장에선 "학교를 위해 한 일인데 생각을 잘못한 것 같다"는 내용의 유서가 함께 발견됐다.

한편, 수사 과정에 강압이 있었다는 의혹에 대해 서울북부지검 측은 "2차례에 걸친 조사에서 가혹행위는 없었다"고 밝혔다.

학교 측은 재학생들이 받을 충격이 우려된다며 오늘과 내일, 이틀간 휴교하기로 결정했다. (코리아헤럴드)

School official commits suicide amid fraud probe

A vice principal at a prestigious South Korean middle school committed suicide on Sunday amid an ongoing investigation into admission-related fraud.

The 54-year-old vice principal, identified by his surname Kim, was found dead inside Younghoon International Middle School in Seoul at around 7 p.m. Beside him was a note: “I did it for the school, but it seems like I have made a mistake.”

Kim was suspected of receiving money from parents in exchange for admitting unqualified students, according to the prosecutors.

The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office on Monday said that “there was no harsh treatment during the two investigations of school officials.”

Younghoon International Middle School officials decided to close the school until Tuesday to help alleviate the shock of attending students.
