이 문장에서 despite 로 시작하는 수식어구가 단서를 제공한다. 우선 인간은 똑같은 문제에 직면했다고 했으니 해결책도 이에 따라 똑같은 해결책을 제시했다고 하는 것이 어울리므로 우선 보기 A 와 D 가 어울린다. 근데 첫 빈칸에 continuity 연속(성, 상태), 계속성 이라는 말은 어울리지가 않는다. 반면 contingency 라는 단어를 빈칸에 넣으면 시간, 공간, 역사에 따르는 여러 부수적인 사건이라는 의미를 가지게 된다. 즉 이런 여러 다른 상황에도 불구하고 똑같은 문제에 직면해 왔고 그래서 유사한 해결책을 생각해 냈다고 하면 어울린다. 그러므로 답은 D 이다.
