Kim Han-wook, a former deputy governor for administrative affairs of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, took office as head of the Jeju Free International Development Center on Monday.

The 65-year-old Jeju native previously held various public offices on the island, serving as general director of Tourism and Culture Bureau from 1994-1997 and director of Planning and Management from 1997-2000.

Kim also served at the national level from 2003-2004 as president of the National Archives of Korea within the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs.

With more than 20 years of experience on Jejudo Island, Kim’s familiarity with the local issues and extensive network are expected to benefit his tenure.

Born in Seogwipo, Jejudo Island, Kim graduated from a local high school and received a master’s degree in public administration from Korea University Graduate School of Policy Studies.

“JDC will organize and operate special task force teams in cooperation with the central and local governments, and foreign consulting companies, among others, to attract private investment,” said Kim at the inauguration ceremony held at Jeju Science Park on Monday.

Kim is expected to focus on resolving pending issues, such as making Korea’s top tour destination a free international city where restrictions for tourism and foreign investments are limited.

“By attracting more long-term foreign investments, JDC will become financially stronger and will establish a system where it’s reflected through increased benefits to the citizens,” added Kim.

Appointed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the chairmanship position at JDC is for a renewable three-year term.

Established on May 15, 2002, JDC is a subsidiary organization of the MOLIT and has an annual budget of about 560 billion won ($496 million).
