일본에서 만29세 후보가 시장직에 당선되며 현직 시장 중 최연소 시장이 됐다.

일본 언론은 후지이 히로토 (29) 후보가 2일 일본의 미노카모 시장을 뽑는 선거에서 여당 자민당의 추천을 받은 모리 유미코(58) 후보를 꺾고 시장으로 당선되었다고 전했다.

이로서 후지이 신임 시장은 훗카이도 유바리 시의 스즈키 나오미치 (32) 시장을 제치고 일본 내 최연소 시장이자 역대 두 번째로 젊은 시장이 되었다. 역대 최연소 시장은 1994년 만 27세로 당선된 시시다 고타로 도쿄도 무사시무라야마(武藏村山) 전 시장이다.

1984년 7월생인 후지이 시장은 2007년에 나고야(名古屋)공대를 졸업했고, 이후 대학원을 다니다 중퇴하고 미노카모시에서 학원을 경영하였다.

요미우리 신문 보도에 따르면 학원의 한 학생이 “선생님이 정치가가 되면 (어떠냐?)”고 말한 것을 계기로 2010년 시의회 의원 선거에 출마해 당선되면서 정계에 뛰어들었다.

후지이 시장은 지난 3월 소니의 자회사 공장이 폐쇄된 후 고용 확보가 미노카모 시의 최대 과제로 떠올랐다는 점을 지적하며 기업 유치, 신규 사업 창출 등을 공약으로 내걸어 표를 끌어모았다. 또한 일각에서 약점으로 지적한 나이를 오히려 강점으로 내세우며 자전거로 시내를 달리며 선거전을 펼치는 등 “젊음”을 적극 어필했다.

반면 모리 후보는 시의원을 4차례 지내며 시의회 부의장까지 역임한 경 력을 내세웠지만 젊은 후보에게 패하고 말았다. 

이번 선거의 투표율은 52.86%로 역대 최저였다. (코리아헤럴드)

Hiroto Fujii, a 29-year-old independent candidate, was elected Sunday as the mayor of Minokamo in Japan, becoming the youngest mayor in the country.

Fujii defeated veteran politician Yumiko Mori, a four-time city council member who was backed by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He is the second-youngest mayor in Japan’s history.

After graduating from Nagoya Institute of Technology, Fujii ran a private education institute in Minokamo, Gifu prefecture. He entered politics in 2010 with his election as a member of the Minokamo city council. He was motivated to run for the office at the suggestion of his student who attended his institute, according to Yomiuri Shimbun.

During the campaign, Fujii’s youth and inexperience invited attacks from the rival camp, but the young politician insisted that age does not matter and “what’s important is the will and policies.”

Fujii’s camp received a major boost when he received backing from former mayor Naoyoshi Watanebe, who told his supporters on Friday that he wanted to lean on “the power of the youth” for the future of the city.
