이일희(25•볼빅)가 미국여자프로골프(LPGA) 투어 첫 승이자 프로 선수로서의 생애 첫 우승을 카리브해의 섬 바하마에서 일궜다.

이일희는 27일(이하 한국시간) 바하마 파라다이스 아일랜드의 오션 클럽 골프장에서 12홀로 치러진 대회 마지막 날 3라운드에서 5타를 줄여 최종 합계 11언더파 126타로 정상에 올랐다.

1988년 용띠 동갑으로 코리안 낭자 군단의 주축을 이루는 박인비(25•KB금융그룹), 신지애(25•미래에셋)에 가려 국내•국외 대회에서 이렇다 할 성적을 못 내던 이일희는 첫 LPGA 투어 우승으로 정상에서 이들과 어깨를 나란히 하게 됐다.

프로 데뷔 7년, LPGA 투어 4번째 시즌 만에 얻은 값진 우승 트로피다. 
절친한 친구 신지애에게 의탁해 미국에서 제2의 골프 인생을 시작한 이일희는 뚜렷한 성적을 남기지 못하자 한국에 돌아오려 했다.

그러나 한국프로골프투어(KLPGA) 투어 시드 선발전에서 낙방해 어쩔 수 없이 다시 미국으로 돌아가 승부를 보기로 한 독특한 이력을 지녔다.

벼랑에 몰린 상태에서 LPGA 우승이라는 기적을 연출한 터라 그의 인생을 전화위복의 전형이라 부를 만 하다.  

2004년 아시아-태평양 주니어 챔피언십에서 우승하고 2006년 프로에 입문한 이일희는 한국여자프로골프(KLPGA) 투어에서 한 번도 정상을 차지하지 못했으나 LPGA 진출을 선언해 화제를 모았다. 

2009년 퀄리파잉스쿨에서 20위에 오른 그는 2010년부터 LPGA 대회에 출전했다. 

나무랄 데 없는 스윙 자세와 샷 실력을 겸비했으나 결정적인 순간 주저앉은 바람에 이일희는 2008년 우리투자증권 레이디스 챔피언십, 2009년 MBC 투어 제2회 롯데마트 오픈 등 국내 투어 대회에서 두 차례 준우승만 차지했다.

지난해부터 LPGA 무대에 전념한 그는 이번 대회까지 통산 5차례 톱 10에 진입하는 성과를 남겼다.

2010년부터 2년간 이렇다 할 결과물을 내지 못한 이일희는 2011년 말 한국 복귀를 추진했지만 정작 KLPGA 투어 시드 선발전에서 고배를 들자 차라리 미국에 남기로 했다.  

밑바닥에 추락한 시점부터 그의 골프 인생에 새로운 전기가 열렸다.

2012년 메이저대회인 US오픈에서 공동 4위에 오르고 에비앙 마스터스에서 공동 9위를 차지해 존재감을 알린 이일희는 6일 끝난 킹스밀 챔피언십에서 10언더파 274타를 기록하고 공동 3위에 오르며 자신감을 얻었다.

이어 폭우로 하루 12홀씩 사흘간 36홀의 '미니 대회'로 치러진 퓨어실크-바하마 클래식에서 사흘 내내 안정적인 플레이를 펼치며 정상급 선수를 따돌리고 고대하던 샴페인을 터뜨렸다.

이일희는 마지막 날 강풍을 뚫고 보기 없이 버디 5개를 낚는 신들린 샷을 구사하며 어렵게 찾아온 우승 기회를 놓치지 않았다. 

우승상금 19만 5천 달러(약 2억1천600만원)를 챙긴 이일희는 올 시즌 30만 9천 달러를 벌어들여 시즌 상금 랭킹 37위에서 12위권으로 수직 상승 했다.

미국 생활 초반 신지애에게 신세를 많이 진 그는 미안한 생각에 독립을 결정했고 현재 모든 투어 일정을 스스로 판단하고 소화하며 홀로서기에 성공했다.

자식의 힘들어하는 모습을 보고 부모의 마음이 더 아플까 봐 어떤 환경에서든 밝고 씩씩하게 행동하려는 속 깊은 효녀이기도 하다.

이일희는 지난주까지 드라이버 평균 거리에서 LPGA 선수 중 전체 78위(249.903 야드), 평균 타수 66위(72.323타), 평균 퍼트수 46위(29.74)를 달렸다.

올해 상금 랭킹 20위 이내 진입을 기대한 이일희가 첫 우승의 상승세를 살려 목표 순위를 한자릿수로 상향 조정할지 관심이 모아진다. (연합뉴스)

Lee Il-hee earns first LPGA Tour win in Bahamas

South Korean Lee Il-hee earned her first career LPGA Tour victory in a rain-shortened tournament in the Bahamas local time on Sunday.

Lee won the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic at the Ocean Club Golf Course with a three-round total of 11-under 126, two strokes better than Irene Cho of the United States. Lee took home US$195,000 for her victory.

Lee is the third different South Korean winner on the tour this year, after Park In-bee, who has three wins already, and Shin Ji-yai.

A severe rainstorm earlier this week forced organizers to shorten the tournament to 36 holes at par-137. Golfers played 12 holes in each of the three rounds, skipping several submerged holes.

The first two rounds were set at par-45, while the final round was par-47, as the golfers played the par-5 18th instead of the par-3 fourth as they had done the first two days.

Lee was bogey-free for her final round with five birdies in 12 holes, including one on the 18th.

Lee sat at 6-under after her first 24 holes, three shots back of the leader, Paola Moreno of Colombia. While Moreno faltered with four bogeys against no birdies in the final round, the South Korean poured in three straight birdies to start her day and never looked back.

Lee, 24, made a clutch par putt on the penultimate hole. Her second shot from the fairway on the par-4 hole spun back off the green, and Lee's chip rolled to about four feet shy of the hole.

She drained the par attempt from there and pumped her fist in celebration.

Then on her last hole, Lee hit a fairway wood from light rough and reached the par-5 green in two, setting up a two-putt birdie.

The emotional Lee told Yonhap News Agency afterward that she overcame "difficult conditions" in the final round, with strong winds and rain.

"Everything went really well, from my shots to putts," she said. "I think the par putt on the 11th hole was huge. I hit a good tee shot, but the second shot rolled off the green. After my chip, I felt I had to make par to win the tournament. That's why I did the fist-pumping after making the putt."

Lee joined the LPGA Tour in 2010 but had struggled so badly that in December 2011, she actually tried to come home and qualify for the Korean LPGA (KLPGA) Tour.

She failed to earn her KLPGA card, which she said forced her to return to the U.S. tour.

"My goal as a golfer had been to play on a big stage," Lee said. "I came to the U.S. trying to challenge myself. Now that I've finally won, I can't stop crying."

Moreno tied 13 others for 13th place with a 5-under total.

Joining Moreno at 5-under were two South Koreans, Ryu So-yeon and Yoo Sun-young.

An LPGA event must complete at least 36 holes to be official.

There have been 15 LPGA Tour events shortened to 36 holes since 1963.

The last 36-hole tournament was the 2007 Hana Bank-KOLON Championship in South Korea. (Yonhap News)
