The country's trade commission said Thursday that it has recommended yet another extension of punitive duties on choline chloride imports from four countries, including the United States and China.

The country has been imposing anti-dumping duties of between 22.19 percent and 27.32 percent since October 2004 on shipments of choline chloride from the U.S., Canada, China and India.

Choline chloride is an organic compound often used as an additive in feed for animals.

The Korea Trade Commission said it has advised the government to impose punitive duties for another three years until the end of June 2016.

"Since the government began imposing anti-dumping duties, some damages to the local industry have been repaired. However, the commission decided such damages may recur once the anti-dumping duties are stopped when considering the production capacity of China, which greatly exceeds the global demand," it said in a press release.

In 2012, the world consumed about 390,000 tons of choline chloride, but China alone could produce 692,000 tons, it added.

The Finance Ministry will decide whether to extend the anti-dumping duties on imports from the countries.

Meanwhile, the trade commission said it has also decided to recommend the start of an official probe on alleged dumping of oriented polypropylene (OPP) film from China, Indonesia and Thailand.

The decision follows the commission's preliminary investigation that began January.

OPP film is a glossy film used in a wide range of applications, including packaging, labeling and textiles.

The local market for OPP film reached 276 billion won ($247.6 million) in 2012 with 68 percent of the total supplied by local manufacturers and 23.5 percent by manufacturers from the three countries, the commission said. (Yonhap News)
