An audio file uploaded to YouTube last weekend has clearly shown where the government should direct its economic democratization campaign.The short clip, lasting less than three minutes, recorded a phone conversation three years ago between a young sales manager of Namyang Dairy Products, the largest company in the domestic dairy market, and an older local distributor of its products. 

지난 주말 유투브에 게시된 오디오 파일은 정부가 경제민주화 운동을 어떤 방향으로 가야할 지를 명백히 보여주고 있다. 3분도 채 안되는 이 짧은 동영상은 3년 전 국내 유제품 시장의 최대 기업인 남양 유업의 젊은 판매 관리자와 그보다 나이가 더 많은 지방의 유제품 유통업자간 전화 대화를 녹음했다.
The Namyang manager, however, turned a deaf ear to his plea and used abusive language against him. As the distributor refused to swallow what he saw as the company‘s inordinate demands, the official spewed insults at him and threatened to ruin him. The audio file went viral, triggering a public outcry against the Namyang official’s outrageous behavior and the company‘s predatory business practices. Namyang issued a statement of apology and had the overbearing official resign. Yet it did not calm public anger. 

그러나 남양 관리자는 그의 애원을 듣지 않고 그에게 욕설을 가했다. 유통업자가 회사의 부당한 요구라고 생각하는 것을 받아들이지 않자 이 관리자는 유통업자에게 모욕적인 발언을 내뱉고 그를 망하게 할 것이라고 위협했다. 이 오디오 파일은 남양 관리의 무례한 행동과 회사의 착취적인 영업관행에 대한 국민적 비난을 초래하면서 구전으로 확산됐다. 남양유업은 사과문을 발표하고 오만한 이 관리를 사퇴하도록 만들었다. 그러나 이것은 국민적 분노를 진정시키지 못했다. 

One reason companies continue to employ unfair business practices is that the gains they earn from them more than offset the penalties imposed on them. The government needs to deal with the case sternly so that it can serve as a warning to other companies relying on undemocratic practices. 

기업들이 계속해서 불공정한 사업관행을 하는 큰 이유는 이로부터 벌어 들이는 수익이 자신들에게 부과되는 처벌을 상쇄하고도 남는다는 점이다. 정부는 이 사건을 단호하게 엄정히 처리해 비민주적인 관행에 의존하는 다른 기업들에게 경고가 될 수 있도록 해야 한다.
