LG CNS, the IT arm of South Korean conglomerate LG, said Tuesday its affiliate has launched an electric vehicle sharing service for Seoul residents.

Under the service operated by EverOn, an affiliate of LG CNS, drivers can rent the electric vehicles at posts in Seoul Station, Suseo Station and Sangam DMC Station around the clock, the company said in a press release.

“EverOn plans to introduce more electric car models and expand renting posts in residential areas and near key landmarks,” said company executive Song Ki-ho.

The LG CNS unit plans to expand the posts to 40 venues across the capital by the end of April and operate 120 electric vehicles, it added. The environmentally-friendly cars can be fully charged within 30 minutes at stations run by the city government.

Electric cars can be rented for a minimum of one hour at an hourly rate of 6,300 won ($5.50), according to the company.

The launch comes in line with growing demand for car sharing services amid a global economic slump. Car sharing clubs such as Zipcar, Auto-Lib and Car2Go have gained success in the United States, France and Germany. (Yonhap News)
