Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance promoted 161 workers to the position of junior manager on Monday, 50 of whom are female workers. The figure is a three-fold increase since 2010 when the percentage of women was less than 10 percent.

“The company will spare no effort in encouraging women to actively work at the office,” an officer from SF & MI told local news media.

The move reflects a steady change in male-dominated Korea, encouraging women to pursue their career in diverse industrial sectors.

The advance of women could also be seen in high-pressure jobs. For instance, Lee Geum-hyeong was named the nation’s first female Chief Superintendent General last month, the second-highest post in the Korean National Police Agency.

Six out of 10 summa cum laude graduates in Korean National Police University in the past ten years were women, according to reports from KNPU.

Statistics from Korean Association of Law Schools showed that 4.2 out of 10 applicants who passed the law school exams were women. Despite a slight fall in the number compared to last year, the female ratio has been continuously on the rise since the introduction of the law school system.

직장내 여성비율 ↑, ‘여풍(女風)’이 분다

삼성화재는 최근 8일 과장 161명을 승진시켰다. 이 가운데 50명이 여성으로, 창사 이래 여성 비율이 가장 많다. 2010년에 신임과장의 여성비율이 10%에 그쳤던 것에 비하면 3년 만에 3배나 늘어난 것이다.

삼성화재 관계자는 "최근 여성 인재 활용이 사회적 이슈로 대두하고 있어 여성직원이 당당하게 업무에 임할 수 있도록 다양한 지원을 아끼지 않을 계획"이라고 말했다.

남성주도사회인 한국에서 소위 ‘여풍’이 불고 있다. 이는 여성으로 하여금 보다 다양한 직군에서 두각을 나타내게끔 만든다.

이러한 현상은 고강도 직업군에서도 나타난다. 지난달 경찰 창설 이래 첫 여성 치안정감이 탄생했다. 치안정감은 차관급인 경찰청장(치안종감) 바로 아래 계급으로 전국에 다섯 보직밖에 없다.

최근 10년 간 경찰대 수석 졸업자는 6번이 여성이었을 만큼 여성의 사회진출이 돋보인다.

법학전문대학원협의회가 밝힌 2013년도 로스쿨 합격자 통계에 따르면 10명 중 4.2명이 여성인 것으로 나타났다. 지난 해 보다 소폭 하락했지만 선발 첫해인 2009학년도 1기 총 1,998명 중 여성이 3.9%였을 때부터 여전히 상승세를 보이고 있다. (박수희 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
