A warm, smooth cappuccino or latte is ideal for coping with mid-spring frosty winds. It warms you up, boosts energy and, more than anything, provides comfort in a hectic life.

To share such a good feeling with the less wealthy, a number of cafe owners across Europe have joined the “suspended coffee” initiative.

Suspended coffee is an extra coffee that one pays for in advance for someone in need. People participating in the initiative go to a coffeehouse, order their coffee and prepay for another that will be “suspended.” It will then be given to poor people who might struggle in the cold weather.

The initiative is based on an old Naples tradition called “caffe sospreso,” literally meaning “suspended coffee” in Italian. More than 150 cafes in Bulgaria have joined this goodwill initiative to share a heartwarming coffee.

A Facebook post that gives details about the suspended coffee initiative became a massive viral hit, earning some 400,000 “likes” and being shared more than 100,000 times. The initiative’s website is under development and a smartphone application is under way.

‘착한 커피’ 유럽 전역에서 ’화제몰이’

이러한 커피를 마시면서 느끼는 좋은 감정을 경제적으로 부유하지 못한 사람들과 나누고 싶은 마음에 유럽 전역의 많은 커피전문점 주인들은 “서스펜디드 커피” 프로젝트에 동참하고 있다.

“서스펜디드 커피는” 커피가 필요한 다른 사람을 위해 추가로 한 잔을 미리 구매해놓는 커피다. 프로젝트에 참여하는 사람들은 자신의 커피를 시킬 때 한 잔의 커피값을 미리 지불해 추운날 따뜻한 음료가 필요한 사람들이 마실 수 있게끔 만들어준다.

이 프로젝트는 이탈리아 나폴리 지방의 오랜 전통인 “Caffe sospeso”에서 출발했고, 현재 불가리아에서 150개 이상의 커피전문점이 이 운동에 동참하고 있다.

서스펜디드 커피를 설명하는 페이스북 게시글은 화제를 모아 급속도로 퍼져나가고 있다. 현재까지 총 40만 여 건의 “좋아요”와 10만여 번의 공유가 진행되었다. 프로젝트를 기획한 존 스위니(28)는 현재 웹페이지를 개설중에 있으며 홍보를 위한 스마트폰 어플리케이션도 고안 중이다. (박수희 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
