암컷 박새의 생김새가 아기새의 건강에 영향을 미친다는 연구조사가 나와 화제다.

박새는 참새목 박새과의 조류로 가슴에는 세로의 검정색 줄무늬가 있고 두 뺨은 흰 것을 특징으로 한다. 

체코팔라츠키 대학의 연구진들은 각기 상이한 무늬를 지닌 두 마리의 어미새들의 새끼를 바꿔 치기 하여 유전적과 환경적인 부모의 외형이 새끼 새들의 건강에 어떠한 영향을 끼치는 지 알아보았다.

연구 결과에 의하면 유전적 어미새의 검정색 줄무늬 크기는 아기새의 무게와 상관관계를 갖고 있었다, 또한, 면역능력은 유전과 환경적 어미들의 영향을 모두 받았으며, 양 볼의 흰 부분이 얼마나 정갈한지가 주요 변수였다.

건강한 아기새들은 생식기능을 수행할 때까지 살아남을 가능성이 높으므로, 어미새들의 외모가 곧 종족번식의 성공유무를 결정하는 주요 요인일 수 있다고 연구진들은 밝혔다. (코리아헤럴드)

Good-looking birds raise healthy babies

New research has found that the appearance of a female great tit (Parus major) affects the health conditions of its offspring.

According to the study done by researchers at Palacky University in the Czech Republic, the bird’s representative features -- a black stripe across the breast and white patches on the cheeks -- correlate to a chick’s weight and immune strength at two weeks.

In order to compare the weight and immune system of baby birds from mothers of different ornamentation, the researchers swapped the chicks to see how their health conditions differed.

The result showed that the size of black breast stripe on the genetic mother affected the chick’s weight at two weeks, while both genetics and the immaculateness of the foster mothers’ white cheek patches were related to the strength of the immune system.

The physical appearance of the mother bird can be critical to the reproduction of the species as well since healthier ones are more likely to survive to adulthood.
