A vial containing a rare Venezuelan virus has gone missing from a Texas biotech laboratory, the laboratory's president said.

The vial was noted missing during a routine inventory, Dr. David L. Callender, University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, said. The virus, guanarito, is only found naturally in a small section of Venezuela and because it is not known to transmit between humans it poses "no appreciable public health risk," Callender said.

It's believed the vial was mistakenly destroyed during routine maintenance and foul play is not suspected, The Houston Chronicle said Sunday.

Guanarito is carried by rodents native to Venezuela and can cause hemorrhagic fever if contracted by humans, the lab said. (UPI)

미국 텍사스의 한 생물공학 연구실에서 출혈열을 발생시키는 바이러스가 담긴 병이 사라졌다고 연구소장이 밝혔다.

구아나리토라고 알려진 이 바이러스는 베네수엘라의 작은 지역에서 자연적으로 발생했으며 사람 사이에서는 전이되지는 않는 것으로 알려졌다.

지역 언론은 이 바이러스가 연구실에서 매번 행해지는 재고정리 과정 상의 실수 또는 빼돌리기 수법 등의 이유로 사라진 것 같지는 않다고 말했다.

구아나리토는 베네수엘라의 설치류를 통해 전해진 것으로 바이러스로 이 바이러스에 사람이 노출된 경우 출혈열을 일으키게 된다.
