A North Korean movie that has made its debut in the United States last month will be shown at two more film festivals in the United States, a media report said Saturday.

   The romantic comedy made jointly by North Korean, British and Belgian film producers has been invited to the Hawaii and Wisconsin film events slated for April, Radio Free Asia said.

   The movie is set and filmed in Pyongyang, and portrays the life of Kim Yong-mi, a 28-year-old coal miner, who overcomes hardships to fulfill her dream of becoming a trapeze artist.

The film has generated attention because it shows the "lighter" side of life in the isolated country that has drawn international attention for defying warnings by the United Nations and other countries by detonating a nuclear device on Feb. 12.

The country has also warned it will use its nuclear deterrence if it is threatened by outside aggressors.

   The movie meanwhile was first shown at the Miami International Film Festival from Feb. 8-9 and at the Center for Asian American Media festival held in San Francisco.

   It was first shown overseas in Canada during the 37th Toronto International Film Festival last September and at the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) in October in Busan, South Korea.

 북한이 영국, 벨기에와 합작해 만든 영화 '김동무는 하늘을 난다'가 미국 국제영화제에서 추가로 상영될 예정이라고 미국 자유아시아방송(RFA)이 23일 전했다.

    이 방송에 따르면 '김 동무는 하늘을 난다'는 오는 내달 7∼10일 열리는  '하와이 국제 영화제'와 같은 달 12∼16일 열리는 '위스콘신 영화제'에 초청받았다.

    이 영화는 앞서 지난달 8∼9일 열린 '마이애미 국제영화제'에서 상영됐고 이달16일부터 열리는 '샌프란시스코 아시안 아메리칸 미디어센터 영화제'에도 공식 상영작으로 초청받았다.

    RFA는 "월스트리트저널이 이 영화를 소개하는 기사를 쓰기도 했다"며 "(기사는) 서양인들이 '은둔의 국가'에서 찍은 '특별한 영화'라고 평가했지만, 북한을 다룬 다른 다큐멘터리와는 달리 북한을 밝고 경쾌한 느낌의 '천국'으로 그리고 있다는 비판도 받고 있다고 소개했다"고 전했다.

    북한의 김광훈 감독과 영국의 니컬러스 보너 감독, 벨기에 안자 델르망 감독이 지난해 공동 제작한 '김동무는 하늘을 난다'는 탄광에서 일하면서 평양교예단의  곡예사를 꿈꾸는 여주인공이 꿈을 이루는 내용을 담고 있다.

    북한과 서양이 처음 합작한 영화로 지난해 9월 캐나다에서 열린 제37회  토론토국제영화제에 초청돼 해외에 처음 공개됐고, 한 달 뒤 열린 부산국제영화제에서  특별 상영되기도 했다.
