In the first picture, an opponent is approaching from the side. In this case, use the leg closest to the approaching opponent and kick using the heel of your foot to hit the opponent. This is called the side kick. It is when the whole leg extends toward the opponent in a straight line for a powerful attack.

If the opponent approaches from the front, you can also turn your body to the side and use your back leg to attempt a kick immediately.

Side kicks are very effective kicks to use against opponents that approach from the front or the side.

When thoroughly practicing this kick, focus on balance, speed, timing, flexibility and power to be prepared for any situation. Make sure to execute 100 percent of the kick’s power by quickly unfolding your leg in a straight line to your side.
