Former U.S. President George W. Bush will be remembered as a "great artist," his painting teacher says.

In an interview with WAGA-TV, Atlanta, Bonnie Flood of Cumming, Ga., said she spent a month with Bush in Boca Grande, Fla., giving him 6 hours of daily instruction, Politico reported Friday.

She told the Fox affiliate the former president started out painting dogs and graduated to landscapes as he became more comfortable with the medium.

Three of Bush's paintings became public when a hacker posted items gleaned from family email accounts. Two of the paintings appeared to be self-portraits -- one showing the lower legs and feet of someone in a bathtub and the other the upper back and head of a man in a shower, his face partly visible in a shaving mirror.

The third was a picture of a stone church.

Flood was more enthusiastic about Bush's works than most critics who reviewed them.

"He has such a passion for painting, it's amazing," Flood said. "He's going to go down in the history books as a great artist."

Bush is following in the footsteps of President Dwight Eisenhower and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, both enthusiastic painters.

Flood said she was unsure what to call Bush and finally settled on 43, which is how the 43rd president signs his work.

"When I really wanted him to do something, I would say, 'Mr. President, you know that you don't do it that way," she said. (UPI)

미국 전 대통령 조지 W. 부시에게 그림을 가르치던 미술 교사가 부시는 “위대한 예술가”로 기억될 것이라고 말했다.

미술 교사 보니 플루드는 하루에 6시간씩 한달 간 부시 전 대통령에게 개인 교습을 하고 첫 수업에는 개를 마지막 수업은 풍경화로 마무리 지었다고 말했다. 

부시의 작품 3점은 가족 이메일 계정을 해킹 당하면서 대중에게 공개된 바 있다.

그 중 두 점은 자화상으로 한 그림에는 부시 자신으로 보이는 한 사람의 다리와 발을 묘사했고, 다른 한 점에는 샤워부스 안에 있는 사람의 등과 머리를 그렸는데 거울을 통해 부시의 얼굴이 부분적으로 보였다. 마지막 그림은 교회를 담은 풍경화인 것으로 알려졌다.

플루드는 부시의 작품을 평가한 어떠한 미술 비평가들보다 더 열렬한 호응을 보였다.

“부시는 그림에 대한 엄청난 열정을 가졌다”며 “그는 역사책에 ‘위대한 예술가’로 남을 것이다”라고 말했다.

부시 이외에도 그림에 대해 남다른 관심을 보인 대통령은 존재했다.

제 34대 미국 대통령인 드와이트 아이젠하워과 영국의 총리를 지낸 윈스턴 처칠은 열정적인 화가였다.

플루드는 부시를 어떻게 불러야 할지 몰라 부시가 자신의 작품에 사인할 때 쓴 “43대 대통령”에서 ‘43’만 따와 불렀다고 회고했다.

플루드는 “그가 뭔가 꼭 고쳤으면 좋겠다고 생각이 들 때는 “대통령님, 그런 식으로 하는 게 아니라는 것 아실 텐데요”라며 존칭을 했다"고 말했다.
