Microsoft said it was developing a whiteboard that completes a diagram or chart based on the user’s drawing, the BBC reported.

With the digital whiteboard, users will be able to create diagrams or charts with a simple sketch. For instance, when a teacher draws a simple stick figure and a battery, related data such as population and electricity usage cited in research will be automatically drawn up.

“As computers grow more capable of handling massive amounts of data, they also need to become more intuitive to use,” said Kevin Kutz, spokesman for Microsoft Research.

The company’s spending on R&D surpassed $9.8 billion last year, outstripping Apple’s $3.4 billion and Google’s $6.8 billion. Microsoft is speculated to have set aside a significant part of its research budget on its whiteboard project, named “SketchInsignt.”

The project, only in its early stages, was launched in 2006. The prototype of the canvas will be introduced at Techfest, an annual tech festival of Microsoft for its researchers and developers.

사용자의 의도에 따라 각종 도표와 차트를 자동 완성시켜주는 화이트보드 개발 연구를 진행 중이라고 마이크로소프트사가 BBC를 통해 밝혔다.

디지털 화이트보드를 이용해 사용자들은 간단한 스케치만으로 그래프와 차트를 만들 수 있다. 예를 들어 사람 모양의 그림을 그리면 자신이 발표하는 내용에 나오는 인구 수가 보여지고, 그 옆에 배터리를 그리면 사람들의 전력소모 양을 알려주는 차트가 나오게 된다.

“컴퓨터가 나날이 대용량 데이터를 다루고 진화해감에 따라 조금 더 직관적으로 사용될 필요가 있다” 라고 케빈 커츠 마이크로소프트 대변인은 외신을 통해 밝혔다.

“스케치 인사이트” 프로젝트는 지난 해 98억 달러 (약 10조 6000억원)를 연구개발비로 투자한 마이크로소프트사의 주요 프로젝트이다. 마이크로소프트 본사 연구원으로 일하고 있는 이봉신 박사가 주도적으로 연구하고 있다.

아직 개발 초기 단계인 이번 프로젝트는 지난 2006년 개발에 착수하였다. 화이트보드의 프로토타입은 마이크로소프트사 내 기술자들을 위한 페스티벌인 “테크페스트”에서 처음 공개될 예정이다.
