“Gift from Room 7,” a heartwarming comedy which drew more than 11 million viewers in South Korea, is getting a mixed reception.

The film, depicting a mentally challenged father who is wrongfully imprisoned in Room 7 for murder, has been lauded for its impressive performances by the main actors and its touching storyline.

But for all the praise, some viewers had negative views about the plot. They said that several scenes did not logically follow from the previous ones, distracting viewers.

“The lead actor Ryoo Seung-ryong and Gal So-won’s performances were almost perfect, but some scenes seemed as if they were strategically designed to bring tears out. I don’t feel good about it,” mentioned one viewer on his Twitter account.

“Gift from Room 7” sold 11.7 million tickets in 41 days, outperforming last year’s hit “Gwanghae: The Man who Became the King,” which broke the 11 million mark in 48 days. Attracting more than 10 million viewers is often seen as the threshold to cross to be considered a smash hit movie in Korea.

최근 천만 관객을 동원한 휴먼 코미디 영화 ‘7번 방의 선물’의 관객 반응이 엇갈리고 있다.

살인 누명을 쓰고 사형선고를 받은 지적장애 아버지와 7살 딸 예승의 부녀간 사랑을 그린 영화 ‘7번 방의 선물’은 배우들의 훌륭한 연기와 감동적인 스토리라인으로 ‘가슴으로부터의 울림이 있다’는 찬사를 받은 바 있다.

하지만 몇몇 관객들은 교도소에 아이가 들어오는 비현실적인 설정과 감동을 의도한 작위적인 느낌이 드는 다수의 컷 때문에 영화에 몰입하지 못했다고 감상평을 남기기도 했다.

한 트위터 유저는 “류승룡과 갈소원 의 연기는 일품이었지만 장면 전환이 어색한 부분이 많고 억지 울음을 유도하는 장면들이 있어 중간중간 보기 불편했다”라는 감상평을 남기기도 했다.

4일 영화진흥위원회 집계에 따르면 ‘7번방의 선물’은 1170만4642명의 누적 관객수를 끌어 모았다고 집계됐다. 이는 해운대, 도둑들, 광해에 이은 2013년의 첫 한국 천만 영화다. 천만 명의 관객수를 동원한다는 것은 한국사람 5명 중 1명이 보았다는 것으로, 흥행영화의 지표로 주로 꼽힌다. (박수희 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
