Women want partners who tower over them, while men’s preferred height difference is significantly smaller, according to research by Dutch scientists.

“Both men and women prefer to be in a couple where the man was taller than the woman, but not too tall, and the preference was most pronounced in women who, unlike men, considered partner heights unacceptable if they resulted in her being taller,” said Gert Stulp, evolutionary psychologist from the University of Groningen who led the study.

The researchers conducted a survey on 700 men and women about their partners and found that women preferred their partners to be eight inches (20 centimeters) taller than them. However, men wanted their partners to be just 3 inches (7.6 centimeters) shorter than themselves.

Viren Swami, a social psychologist at the University of Westminster, suggested women’s preference for tall men may be attributed to two theories: a biological theory that taller men have an edge over smaller men in reproduction, and social theory that people view taller men as more masculine.

A recent survey found that Korean women also preferred taller men.

According to a survey conducted by Human Life Institute, run by matchmaking company Duo, women’s ideal height for their partners was 177 centimeters. The same survey showed that men’s ideal partner height was 163 centimeters.

남녀가 각자 바라는 ‘배우자와의 키 차이’가 다르다는 연구결과가 나왔다.

네덜란드 흐로닝언 대학 연구진이 최근에 발표한 연구에 따르면, 여성들은 자신보다 8인치 (약 20cm) 큰 남성과 만나기를 원하지만, 남성들은 자신의 배우자가 자신보다 3인치 (약 7.6cm) 작기를 원한다고 한다.

연구를 주도한 심리학자 게르트 스튤프는 “남녀 모두의 경우, 커플 중 남자가 여자보다 어느 정도 키가 크기를 원하지만, 여자들의 경우 남자가 더 키가 작은 것을 받아들이지 못할 정도로 이러한 성향이 심한 것으로 나타났다”라고 말했다.

연구진은 남녀 700여명에게 설문조사를 시행하여 이와 같은 결과를 얻어냈다.

영국 웨스트민스터 대학의 사회심리학자 비렌 스와미는 이와 같은 성향이 나타나는 이유는 두 가지가 있는데, 첫째는 생물학적인 요인으로서 키가 큰 남성이 작은 남성보다 번식력이 더 뛰어나다는 인식이고, 두 번째 요인은 사회적으로 키 큰 사람이 더 남성적으로 인식되기 때문이라고 한다.

한편 최근 설문에 따르면 한국 여성들 역시 키가 큰 남성을 선호하는 것으로 알려졌다.

결혼정보 회사 듀오가 운영하는 듀오휴먼라이프 연구소가 작년 발표한 조사결과에 따르면, 미혼 여성들이 밝힌 배우자의 이상적인 신장은 177cm인 것으로 드러났다. 미혼 남성들의 경우 이상적인 배우자의 신장은 163cm였다.
