Korean telecommunication company LG Uplus announced that it will introduce a new subscription plan which provides unlimited Long Term Evolution data transfer for the first time in local industry.

LG Uplus announced on Friday that the new LTE data plan will be released on Jan. 31 and will temporarily invite subscribers for three months. Whether the subscription will be available after three-month period will be later decided, considering the number of customers, the company said.

The new unlimited LTE data plan consists of three types with basic rates of 95,000 won, 110,000 won and 130,000 won, respectively.

It is the first time for a Korean mobile carrier ever to launch an unlimited data plan for LTE service. Local telecommunication firms have so far offered unlimited data transfer service only for third-generation smartphone plans with basic rates of around 50,000 won.

Smartphone users who adopt the new plan will be allowed to use 2 Mbps of LTE-class data service even after using up all the data traffic allotted to them every month. Previous unlimited data plans for LTE smartphones provided slower network service once users consumed monthly traffic.

“The new unlimited LTE data plan is the only LTE subscription plan in Korea which protects customers from excessive phone bills,” Won Jong-kyu, executive director at LG Uplus’ mobile business department said.

“The company decided to willingly bear the costs for network reinforcement to provide better customer service.”

As LG Uplus declares the introduction of the unlimited LTE data plan, its competitors -- SK Telecom and KT -- are expected to follow suit. “The company is considering suitable countermeasures,” the two mobile giants said.

25일 LG유플러스는 이달 31일부터 ‘LTE 데이터 무한자유 요금제’를 출시해 3개월 동안 한시적으로 가입자를 모집할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 가입자를 추가로 받을지 여부는 네트워크 환경과 가입자 수 현황을 고려해 추후 결정될 예정이다.

새로 선보이는 ‘LTE 데이터 무한자유 요금제’는 95, 110, 130 세 종류로 구성되며 각각 기본요금이 9만5천원, 11만원, 13만원이다.

국내 이동통신사가 LTE 환경에서 무제한 요금제를 출시한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 그 동안 국내 이동통신사들은 월 기본요금이 5만원을 넘는 3세대 스마트폰 요금제에 대해서만 무제한 데이터 서비스를 지원해왔다.

특히 ‘LTE 데이터 무한자유 요금제’는 매월 할당된 사용 데이터 양을 초과한 이후에도 2Mbps의 LTE급 고속 통신망을 이용할 수 있어, 할당 데이터 양이 초과되면 2G급의 느린 데이터 서비스만을 무제한 지원해 온 종전의 상품들과는 차별화했다.

LG유플러스 모바일사업부 원종규 전무는 “LTE 데이터 무한자유 요금제는 데이터 요금 폭탄 방지를 위한 국내 유일의 LTE 요금보험”이라며 “네트워크 투자확대 부담에도 고객편의를 위해 선도적으로 LTE에서 무제한 요금제를 내 놓기로 했다”고 설명했다. (코리아헤럴드)
