President-elect Park Geun-hye named former defense minister Kim Jang-soo to lead a transition team handling external affairs, security and North Korea policies Friday as she finalized the selection of about two dozen top committee members.

The long-awaited announcement paved the way for the transition committee to begin work -- more than two weeks after Park was elected South Korea's first female president in the Dec. 19 vote.

The committee is made up of nine smaller teams and their 23 leaders were announced.

"This transition committee is aimed at setting the administrative philosophy and draft policy platforms on which direction the new government will move so that the incoming government will be launched smoothly," committee chief Kim Yong-joon said while announcing the line-up.

The selections have been delayed as Park put extra care into vetting candidates after her earlier choice of Yoon Chang-jung, a political columnist, as her senior spokesman sparked strong criticism that he is unfit for the job as his past columns were too sensational, standoffish and biased.

Also included in the foreign policy team was Park's long-time foreign affairs adviser Yun Byung-se. A former career diplomat who served as deputy foreign minister and then national security advisor in 2006-2008, Yun is known as the architect of Park's foreign policy campaign platform.

The committee is expected to flesh out Park's campaign pledges to set major agenda items that she will focus on after taking office for a five-year term. Park will be inaugurated in late February to succeed outgoing President Lee Myung-bak. (Yonhap News)

비례대표 의원 시절에는 본회의장에서 박 당선인과 함께 대화하는 모습이 자주 언론에 포착되면서 박 당선인이 신뢰하는 인사라는 평가도 받았다.
당 최고위원까지 지냈지만 올해 4ㆍ11 총선을 앞두고 일찌감치 `재선을 하지 않겠다'고 불출마 소신을 밝히며 눈길을 끌기도 했다.
테니스와 골프 등 각종 스포츠에 능하다. 부인 박효숙씨와 사이에 1남1녀가 있으며 아들도 육군사관학교를 나왔다.
